Speights Brewery – Dunedin, NZ

Pulling a Pint of Speights

Pulling a Pint of Speights

Who could turn down a tour of vintage beer-making facilities AND all-you-can-drink beer samples? Not us!

No stop in Dunedin is complete without a visit to the Speights Brewery Tour. Since 1876, this same location on Rattray Street in downtown Dunedin has been producing the likes of Distinction Ale, Triple Hop Pilsner, Summit Lager, and Gold Medal Ale (you will see the actual gold medal on the tour).

With over 150 years of history, excellent displays and a working brewery to browse, spending an hour and a half learning about one of the most famous beers in the South Island of New Zealand is a treat. It’s just a short walk from the Dunedin train station or The Octagon. Pair this with a trip to the delectable Cadbury World Chocolate Factory and you have a full day of delicious fun!

There are nothing like the smells of a working brewery. Your mouth starts to water as you tour the tanks holding their own special blend of hops. There are a few stairs to climb, but the pace is comfortable for everyone. You’ll be privy to special behind-the-scenes (or behind-the-brewers doors) secrets of what makes the Speights brand so delicious.

But the very best part, IMO, is the beer tasting after the tour. This isn’t just a small glass sample of beer here. This is a pour-your-own Speights-tacular! Six different brews to try – Speights Cider, Distinction Ale, Golden Pale Ale, 5 Malt Old Dark and Gold Medal Ale. The quaint brewery bar makes an excellent place to make new friends while practicing your beer pulling skills!

  • Even though we aren’t big beer drinkers, we are always looking for breweries while traveling to sample different kind of beers and especially ales. We’ve never done a tour of vintage beer-making facilities, interesting!
