Leaning Tower of Pisa at Dawn

A Different Time of Day for Pisa

A Different Time of Day for Pisa

It wasn’t our original intention to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa before daylight. We’d just dropped off our lovely house-sit family at the Pisa airport for a VERY early flight and realized we were only a few minutes away. Why not? Expecting to wait in our car in total darkness until daybreak, we were pleasantly surprised to find the Tower, Cathedral and Baptistry all drowning in bright spotlights. And the best part? Other than the groundskeeper, we were the only people there! No hordes of tourists all trying to hold up the Tower or crowds jostling for the perfect picture, just the brilliant night sky as a perfect backdrop. So if you’re an early riser or just want to beat the crowds, try showing up at 5am, you’ll be in for a treat. And there’s always a coffee bar open nearby to grab an espresso to help get you through the rest of the day!

    • Thanks Samantha! It was nice being there in the silence to just reflect on the town and tower. It was also quite different than our last visit when getting a full picture of the tower was impossible with everyone holding it up – the typical pose for photos!

  • Oh my gosh – this is EXACTLY how I’d like to see sights like the Tower of Pisa. Luckily, I am an early riser, so will make note of this when I travel to Italy next summer. 🙂 Thanks for the tip!

    • It really was a great time of day to see it.. Not only can you get some great shots, but being the only ones at the Tower of Pisa was pretty special too. We will be back near Lucca next summer too, maybe we can connect if the timing is right.
